George Isaacs was a literary man of many parts and produced this single issue magazine while writing plays and poems, and contributing articles to several newspapers. Most often Isaacs wrote under the pen name 'A. Pendragon'. Despite good reviews, no further issues of the little magazine were published. At the reasonably expensive price of one shilling, the prohibitive cost of printing was probably the reason for the magazine's demise. Number one contained poems, essays and short stories. Most of the content was written anonymously, probably by Isaacs himself. An interesting item is an Australian murder story, "Who was the sixth?" by 'G.N.'. A poem by Isaacs, "The myrtle", was published in Number one and later set to music by the opera singer, Madame Stuttaford. One year after Number one, Isaacs founded a more successful magazine, the Critic. He went on to become a founder of the Gawler Bunyip.
