Description :
Over a weekend in January the South Australian German Association stages the Schutzenfest. The schutzenfest - meaning 'Shooting festival' - originated in the provinces of Germany where every town held its own shooting competition and celebration.

The Schutzenfest was first held in Adelaide in 1964. The program includes competition shooting, a beer stein lifting contest (in which competitors have to hold a full beer stein for as long as possible), oompah bands and other music and folk dancing. German style food and drinks, such as beers and ciders, traditional cakes and meats are available from a variety of stalls.
