Description : |
An outline map published in 1932 in J Gordon Hayes' book Conquest of the south pole: Antarctic exploration, 1906-1931 provides an overview of the extent of the knowledge of the Antarctic continent to that time. It includes the aerial explorations of the Antarctic Peninsula (Graham Land) by Sir Hubert Wilkins in 1928. In several flights along the peninsula in November and December of that year he observed what he believed to be a number of channels dividing the peninsula. He also named Hearst land after his major sponsor, the American newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. Wilkins' discoveries were disproved by John Rymill's meticulous ground, sea and aerial surveys of 1934-37: the channels did not exist and the peninsula was attached to the main body of the continent. It should also be noted that there are many sections of the continent which have still not be accurately charted. These are marked by the dotted line. |
