Description :

Close view of a young Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons) that has just been dug out of its tunnel, lying on stony ground. The Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat lives in the semi arid regions of South Australia, including Yorke Peninsula, Murray Mallee and particularly western Eyre Peninsula and across the border into Western Australia. It has relatively recently been 'rediscovered' in south-west New South Wales.

Weighing up to 40 kilograms, it differs from the Common Wombat in having softer, silky grey fur. Its distribution has been affected since European settlement by the impact of land clearing.

It is the State fauna symbol for South Australia.
