Description :

Waterside workers with bags of grain on the wharf at Wallaroo waiting to be loaded onto cargo ships tied up at the jetty.

Wallaroo has the advantage of having deep water close inshore, allowing large vessels to use its jetty. The first jetty was built in 1861, for the shipment of copper ore and ingots from the adjacent mines. Inwards goods included supplies for the town and coal, timber and explosives for the mines. Wheat and wool in season also were shipped from the port. A second jetty was built in 1880 and extended in 1902. This jetty could accommodate the increasingly large ships that loaded wheat and other grains and were able to carry 20,000 to 30,000 bags at a time.

By the 1920s the copper mines had closed, but Wallaroo continued to grow on the export of grains and the import of fertilizer. Another jetty was built in 1926, and in 1958 bulk handling and storage facilities were built at the port. The laborious task of handling bagged wheat became a thing of the past.
