Description :

Sturt included in his Two expeditions ... a description of Collet Barker's explorations around the mouth of the Murray and on the Fleurieu Peninsula as unfortunately Barker did not live to record these details himself. Barker had been instructed to examine St Vincent Gulf and search for another mouth for the River Murray beside that which entered the sea at Encounter Bay. There was no alternative mouth, but Barker confirmed the fertile lands of the peninsula reported by Sturt. He also discovered and named the Sturt River and Onkaparinga River (where a monument to him stands on top of Witton Bluff), and sighted the Port River Inlet from Mt Lofty.
