Map of South Australia showing location of schools in 1850. Includes three watercolour vignettes of Burra Creek, Encounter Bay and River Murray.


William Anderson Cawthorne (1825-1897) was born in London, England, in 1825 and arrived in South Australia in 1841. He became headmaster of Adelaide Grammar School in 1846, was a founding member of the South Australian Preceptors Association in 1851 and Central Board of Education in 1852. Cawthorne published Illustrated Adelaide Post (1867-1874), and produced articles, novels, illustrations and public lectures about South Australian topics, especially Aboriginal peoples.

This map is part of a collection of personal papers of W.A. Cawthorne held at the State Library PRG 489, comprising microfilm of manuscripts held by Mitchell Library, photographs of sketches and ambrotypes held by Mitchell, observations on the Southern Vales, notes on Aboriginal customs, notes on Johann Menge, together with original sketches of Aboriginal implements, Johannes Menge, Rev. John Chapman, Holy Trinity Church, Port Lincoln, Port Pirie, Stansbury and Mount Breckan, and this featured map, illustrated with three beautiful watercolour vignettes.
