Description :

Basedow continues his description of the geology of parts of central Australia. In the Petermann Ranges, the MacKay expedition found traces of FR George's expedition at the top of a hill named Mount McCulloch by Ernest Giles, Mount Phillips by FR George and Nangorru by the local Aboriginal people. Today it is officially known as Mount McCulloch. On the peak were the remains of a cairn erected by the George expedition. MacKay and Basedow began their return journey and found that recent rain had improved the grasses and other vegetation.

Frank Rees George had led a South Australian Government prospecting expedition in 1905-06 to examine the south west and west of the Northern Territory. They were to explore the Petermann Ranges and then travel via the Treuer Range to the Tanami. On 5 December their camp was attacked by a number of Aboriginal men: TW Hall was speared through the eye and H Fabian in the chest. Both men survived. However when the expedition returned to Alice Springs, the leader George died after a short illness. He was replaced by WR Murray and the expedition set out again.
