John Ainsworth Horrocks offered to lead an expedition, funded by fellow colonists, to explore the country north of Spencer Gulf. He was looking for country suitable for farming or pastoralism. His expedition included Bernard Kilroy and Theakston, both workmen from his property, ST Gill an artist, to record the country, Mr Garlick, Jimmy Moorhouse an Aboriginal man, and a camel, considered to be the first in Australia.

Horrocks arrived in South Australia in March 1839, and purchased land 100 miles north of Adelaide. He established Hope Farm, and a village he called Penwortham after his old home in England. Matters did not go quite as planned, with sheep and cattle expensive to purchase and generally sold at a loss. He would not make his fortune as quickly as had been envisaged in England. He returned to England for two years after his father's death, to arrange financial matters for his mother, and on returning to South Australia found he had been defrauded by his agent. The expedition was an attempt to recoup his losses.
