The likelihood of now finding Gibson alive was considered highly unlikely. He had veered away from the track of the other horses and was travelling south, and at right angles to the sand-hills. Lizard tracks were beginning to obscure his tracks and Giles and Tietkens followed with one man on foot. This slowed them down considerably and they were only travelling some 12 or 13 miles at a time. All of their remaining water was given to the horses on which their own lives depended. Reluctantly on 7 May 1874, Giles decided to return to their depot. He named this desert for Alfred Gibson.

With the return to the depot at Fort McKellar, the expedition was effectively ended and Giles with the remainder of his party returned to Charlotte Waters on the Overland Telegraph Line. He reached there on 13 July. No trace of Alfred Gibson has ever been found, although in 1892 a man claimed to be him; a claim that was disproved.
