Description :

Giles named the first permanent water found on the expedition after Queen Victoria, and the desert in which it lies the Great Victoria Desert. He knew that his discovery bore no comparison with Lake Victoria Nyanza or other natural features in Africa named after the Queen, but hoped that his naming of 'a little spring in a hideous desert' would be acceptable. He also wrote of the explorers' pleasure in having a bath and of man and beast being able to drink at will.

Ernest Giles had set out on his fourth expedition in May 1875, equipped with camels from Sir Thomas Elder's stud at Beltana. He again planned to search for a route from Adelaide to Perth, this time following a more southerly route than on his previous expeditions, hoping for better country. From Boundary Dam on the border the expedition found no more water until reaching Queen Victoria Spring, a distance of over 300 miles.
